Yorkshire brewery Brew York has started exporting to China in a move that amplifies its "presence" as a global craft beer brand. Now, with 14 of its beers shipping overseas, the brewery explains how 2025 is becoming a "landmark year".

Brew York’s presence in Asia is about to grow with its new export deal to China. As confirmed by the Brew York co-founder Wayne Smith, the initial shipment includes five pallets sent via air freight. According to Smith, these will travel from Brew York’s cold store and then poured in China in under 10 days.

Speaking to the drinks business, Smith said: “Asia Pacific is one of the most exciting growth regions for craft beer, with demand rising rapidly as drinkers seek out new flavours and experiences. For Brew York, establishing a presence here isn’t just about exporting beer — it’s about building long-term connections with a new audience and securing the future of the brewery for years to come. This milestone is a significant step in ensuring our continued growth and longevity as we approach our 10th year.”

Tap takeovers

Smith has said Brew York will be hosting a series of tap takeovers in cities across China. These will include: Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Guiyang, Longyan, Nanjing, Ningde, Qiqihar, Suzhou, Tianjin, Xuzhou and Yangzhou.

Indeed, shipping the beer to China marks what Smith is heralding as one of  the “most significant projects to date”. This is because, he has highlighted how it builds on the brewery’s growing presence within and beyond mainland Europe.

Smith admitted how, just a decade ago when the brewery began, this outcome would have felt unreal. He explained: “We could only dream of seeing our beers poured on the other side of the world.”

China’s growing appetite for craft beer

Assessing the significance of this, Smith also alluded to the potential he knows that the Chinese market has to offer. He explained: “China’s appetite for craft beer is booming.”

Brew York is, he insisted, simply “thrilled to be part of that story”. Meanwhile, the opporunity means Smith can bring “the creativity and character of Brew York to an entirely new audience”.

The great strides that the brewery is taking are not going unnoticed by the rest of the team, some of whom have been instrumental in making the beer’s journey a reality.

Notably, Brew York export and logistics manager Sam Warren-Close pointed out: “This project is a huge step forward for our export strategy. Getting our beers from York to China in under 10 days ensures drinkers can experience Brew York exactly as we intended – fresh, flavourful, and full of character.”

Brew York’s Smith went on to assure that he is “set to make 2025 a landmark year in the brewery’s international journey”
