OIV puts science and collaboration centre stage at 23rd GiESCO
The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) has underlined the role of science and global cooperation in addressing the wine sector’s most pressing challenges, as it took part in the 23rd GiESCO Conference in Germany.

Focus on the future of viticulture
Held under the OIV’s patronage from 27-31 July 2025, the event was hosted by Hochschule Geisenheim University and brought together 350 experts from 23 countries. Under the theme “Above and Below – Towards the Future,” the conference tackled climate change, evolving consumer preferences, and geopolitical and trade uncertainties.
In his opening speech, OIV director general John Barker said: “Cooperation and science are at the heart of the OIV’s activities. At this crucial moment for the vine and wine sector worldwide, they are needed more than ever.”
The conference aimed to foster knowledge exchange and identify practical solutions for a shifting viticultural landscape, with a strong emphasis on science-based innovation and international collaboration.

OIV unveils 2025-2029 strategic plan
During the event, OIV Head of Unit for Viticulture Enrico Battiston presented the Organisation’s new Strategic Plan, which will guide its work from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2029. The plan sets out six strategic priorities:
- Coordinate approaches to sustainability
- Promote resilient and sustainable viticulture
- Adapt oenology and production processes to the future
- Support all vitivinicultural products
- Simplify international trade
- Contribute to consumer safety and inform perspectives on vine, wine and society
Battiston said the framework aims to help build a more resilient and sustainable viticulture sector, reaffirming the OIV’s commitment to supporting innovation across both scientific and practical fields.
The conference programme included 10 keynote addresses, more than 100 short presentations, and 170 scientific posters. Since 2003, the OIV has supported GiESCO as a key international platform for advancing viticultural knowledge and cooperation.
