New Master of Wine is the first to reside in Denmark
There’s now a Master of Wine in Denmark, as a University of Copenhagen associate professor passes all stages of the qualification to become 2025’s latest MW.
Called Qian Janice Wang, she is currently working in the academic institution’s Department of Food Science, where her interdisciplinary research focuses on “multi-sensory flavour perception and eating behaviour” – as she aims “to understand why people make the food choices they do and to promote behaviour change for healthier, more sustainable lifestyles.”
Her research paper, which forms the final stage of the Master of Wine qualification (following a set of tasting and essay-based exams), was on ‘communicating acidity’, focused on two famously high-acid grapes: Riesling and Chenin Blanc.
Janice holds a DPhil in Experimental Psychology from the University of Oxford, an M.S. in Media Arts and Sciences from MIT, and a B.S. in Computer Science from Caltech.
According to the Institute of Masters of Wine, she is “passionate about bridging the gap between research and industry,” and plans “to conduct more widespread and impactful wine research as an MW.”
It was also noted that among her proudest wine moments was leading Oxford to victory against Cambridge in the varsity blind tasting competition, which she did twice.
Janice joins Jit Hang Jackie Ang MW (Singapore), Amanda Barnes MW (Argentina), Sarah Benson MW (UK) and Kathleen Van den Berghe (Belgium) to complete the 2025 crop of Masters of Wine.

There are now 418 active MWs based in 29 countries.
Commenting on Janice’s achievement, IMW Interim Executive Director Sarah Harrison said: “It is impossible to overstate the commitment required to earn the MW title and the personal triumph it represents.”
Indeed, this month we interviewed India’s first and only Master of Wine, Sonal Holland on the sacrifices she made to achieve the qualification.
