Women In Beer to host its first awards

The first Women in Beer Awards is being launched to recognise and celebrate the women who shape the beer industry.

With recent SIBA figures showing that only 23% of management roles in craft beer are filled by women and just 8% of all brewers are female, the importance of representation and visibility for women who work within the beer industry has become essential.

Speaking to the drinks business, Amélie Tassin, founder of Women in Beer said: “With the many awards for women in business, in tech or even in science that exist in the UK, I was very surprised that nobody ever thought of celebrating and awarding the women who work in the beer industry.”

The mission for Women in Beer, the organisation behind the awards, is to assist in creating role models and show young women that a career in beer can be something for them, too.

With 10 categories across all parts of the industry, the Women in Beer Awards will be open to anyone who identifies as a woman, regardless of background, age, or role within the beer world, and includes those working professionally, independently, or as a volunteer.

According to Women in Beer, the ultimate goal of the awards is to celebrate and uplift women’s contributions across all areas of beer, not only aspects of brewing.

Tassin lamented: “Gender equality in brewing has gotten worse compared to previous years. We desperately need to attract more women into the industry, retain the women who are already here, and also help them to access managerial positions. With the Women In Beer Awards, we’re highlighting their work, celebrating them, and hopefully making the industry a better place for everyone.”

Tassin told db: “The industry is unfortunately still systemically sexist and biased. And if we believe women should also enter the many beer awards that exist, a dedicated celebration is still essential to give them the recognition they deserve.”

The brewing sector has taken backward steps in gender equality and representation with research last year showing fewer women think beer is for them, compared to in previous years.

The awards are set to take place in London on the 28 October 2025 and are being positioned as a celebration as well as a networking opportunity and a platform to promote excellence.

The event has already received support from the industry with only two awards left to sponsor, thanks to CAMRA, SIBA, Simpsons Malt, SSV, Charles Faram, Yakima Chief Hops, WHC Lab, and HIT Training who are championing eight of them.

CAMRA vice chair Gillian Hough said: “Celebrating and congratulating those nominated for the Women in Beer Awards is something really special and close to my heart. From managers, directors, consultants, owners, writers, teachers, journalists, judges and campaigners, women are no longer ‘just’ a part of the industry – they are swaying opinion and driving trends as industry influencers.”

Hough added: “At CAMRA, we are proud to support and champion what the Women in Beer Awards stand for and welcome greater diversity across the beer and pub industry. To every nominee and winner, thank you for inspiring the next generation.”

To learn more about the categories and how to enter or name someone for an award, people can visit the Women in Beer website for more information.

Tickets for the awards event will open after the summer, with a ‘pay what you can’ option for individual tickets, which aims to make the event accessible to as many people as possible. The event also welcomes everyone connected to beer, whatever their gender.
