Returning to London on 30 September, Simply Italian Great Wines will show the “richness and diversity” of the country’s production.

Simply Italian Great Wines has confirmed it will return to London for the seventh time, with a lineup of walkaround tastings and three masterclasses announced. The event will take place on Tuesday 30 September at Stationers’ Hall, a venue in the heart of the city, just minutes from St. Paul’s Cathedral.

Organised by International Exhibitions Management (IEM), the 2025 edition marks significant growth for the tasting. It will showcase around 30 producers in the walkaround element (up from 20 last year) and has one more masterclass on its timetable than in 2024.

“Simply Italian Great Wines continues its aim to highlight the richness and diversity of the wines of Italy,” explains Marina Nedic, managing director of IEM. “We do this by bringing together well known appellations such as Pinot Grigio delle Venezie together with lesser known ones from all over Italy.”

Key masterclasses for the trade

The three masterclasses will survey the Italian wine industry, from a broad look at its overall structure to those responsible for some of its smallest denominations.

Federdoc – the Voluntary Consortia National Confederation for the Protection of the Italian Wines Designations – is an organisation that supports, promotes and represents Italian protected designation of origin (PDO) wines. It therefore assists most of the DOC and DOCG wine regions of Italy, and will show five wines in its masterclass to demonstrate the quality and specific identities fostered by the PDO system.

Another masterclass will take a specific look at one of Italy’s most commercially important regions. The Consorzio Pinot Grigio delle Venezie will present eight wines, illustrating the value and variety found in the region. It is likely to be popular with UK buyers given that, on average, the UK drinks almost three bottles of these wines every second.

Rounding off the masterclass lineup is the Union of DOC Wine Consortia of Friuli Venezia Giulia. The union represents around 1,000 wine companies, with a dual mandate of promoting the region’s wines and supporting integrated pest management practices. Its constituent consortia vary significantly, from the better known Friuli DOC to the tiny Rosazzo DOCG, and the masterclass will offer a whistlestop tour of its production zones.

Informal tasting at its heart

The masterclass programme is always popular, but it is supplemented by an essential walkaround tasting. With around 30 wineries on display in London, Simply Italian Great Wines gives buyers and decision makers a chance to survey a winery’s entire production. Moreover, the casual setup fosters networking and informal meetings to develop new relationships.

The Union of DOC Wine Consortia of Friuli Venezia Giulia will again feature prominently here. The region’s wineries are particularly important considering the gradual decline of red wine consumption in the 21st century. In its DOC and DOCG areas, 75 % of plantings are white grapes, making the Friuli Venezia Giulia a useful source of popular white wines.

Turning to the northwest, Piedmont will also take a prominent role at Simply Italian Great Wines when it comes to London. I Vini del Piemonte, a private entity dedicated to promoting Piedmontese wines in international markets, will bring over some of its wineries. It represents more than 250 small and medium-sized wine producers from the Langhe, Roero, Monferrato, and North Piedmont regions. These include producers of such famous wines as Barolo, Gavi and Moscato d’Asti.
