Italian wildlife inspires new Mezzacorona range

Mezzacorona has introduced a new collection of Castel Firmian wines from the vineyards of the Dolomite Mountains, adorned with local flora and fauna.

In northeast Italy, picturesque mountains and Alpine gardens cradle lush vineyards. Since 1904, the Mezzacorona cooperative of growers has celebrated terroir, nature and wildlife, and shared the beauty of Trentino worldwide through wine.

The winery is rooted in tradition, sustainability and a deep understanding of the land – central to its new Castel Firmian collection. The Vigneti Delle Dolomiti IGT line features three new mountain wines: FildiRose, FiloRosso and FiloBianco, each reflecting different icons associated with the sky-reaching Dolomites. The line pays tribute to the Alpine region, where the flora and fauna serve as storytelling elements.

The UNESCO World Heritage mountain range offers diverse climatic environments, varying from the cold Alpine climate in the north to the Mediterranean climate around Lake Garda. The region is characterised by its geology, primarily consisting of pale mineral rocks. This terroir is the ideal location for Mezzacorona’s more than 1,600 farmers to grow grapes, supported by the winery’s dedication to sustainable viticulture, and producing wines that reflect the essence of Trentino.

With its front label depicting the gliding elegance of an eagle, FiloBianco is a fresh, fruity white blend crafted from the Chardonnay, Müller-Thurgau and Pinot Blanc grape varieties. The grapes are hand-picked from sunny hillside vineyards at 250 metres to 550 metres above sea level. Once harvested, the grapes are placed in small containers to prevent damage and are promptly soft-pressed at the winery.

FiloBianco’s vinification process occurs in small, temperature-controlled steel containers and large wooden barrels, without malolactic fermentation. The wine then matures for approximately seven to eight months in containers in order to best preserve its fruit flavours and aromatics.

The result is a modern and pleasantly aromatic wine with a refreshing Alpine profile, highlighted by notes of citrus, white pepper, herbs and a delicate touch of dried fruit. FiloBianco works well before dinner, or it can be enjoyed as an ideal partner for light pasta dishes, fish and vegetables. With an ABV of 12%, the wine is best served at 10-12°C.

A modern twist

FildiRose is a fresh and aromatic rosé that reflects the delicate beauty of Alpine roses and local fauna, evoking the elegance of an Alpine garden. The wine is crafted from 100% Pinot Grigio grapes, harvested from vineyards at the foot of the Dolomites, on the Rotaliana Plain. The mineral-rich soils in the region promote excellent aromatic ripening of the grapes while preserving acidity and freshness at their peak.

FildiRose Rosé presents a modern twist on the historic Italian Pinot Grigio ramato wine, where the juice is allowed to sit with the skins, resulting in a copper-tinted hue.

With an ABV of 12.5%, FildiRose is best served chilled at a temperature of 8°C–10°C, creating an ideal setting to discover its aromas of red fruits, alongside citrus notes of pink grapefruit and subtle floral undertones. The rosé offers a delightful salinity and freshness on the palate, complemented by lively acidity, making it an excellent choice for all manner of aperitifs.

Finally, FiloRosso red blend stands as a mature reflection of the strength and terroir of the Dolomites, much like the majestic Alpine deer shown on the bottle label. Standing as the backbone of the wine, indigenous Teroldego grapes are harvested from vineyards near the Dolomite rocks, complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes sourced from the Lake Garda area.

The Teroldego grapes benefit from direct sunlight and the reflected light off the white rock, leading to partial dehydration and slight over-ripening. This natural process promotes the polyphenolic ripening of the grapes, which is said to enhance their aroma and structure.

The grapes are hand-harvested in late September and, after crushing and destemming, they undergo vinification in stainless steel for approximately 14 days at a temperature of 26°C–27°C, with the addition of selected yeasts. After fermentation, part of the wine is aged in second-use barriques for 12-14 months, while the remaining 10% is left to mature in new barriques.

Offered at 13.5% ABV, FiloRosso is highlighted by a jammy and velvety profile, marked by ripe notes of red berries, plum and currants. Best served at 12°C–18 °C, the wine offers lingering flavours of tobacco, sweet spices and toasted hazelnut, all supported by ripe and silky tannins.

Whether looking for a wine to kick off the evening or to enjoy during a meal with good friends, the new elegant and fragrant Dolomite collection from Castel Firmian by Mezzacorona speaks volumes on the palate.

As a member of the Wine in Moderation group, Mezzacorona also encourages responsible drinking. This includes making informed choices about health and safety, enjoying wine in a social and healthy setting and, most importantly, savouring the unique characteristics of each wine.
