Terra Organica goes topless in first for Prosecco
Terra Organica has become the first commercially sold Prosecco to legally remove foil capsules from its packaging, following the recent change in UK legislation.
Organic outfit Terra Organica, founded in 2016, has ditched foil capsules from its bottles of fizz, with the move amounting to an annual saving of 500kg of foil. This is expected to reduce the brand’s carbon footprint by more than 1,500 CO2 kg per year.
The change, which is a first for the Prosecco category, applies to both Terra Organica Prosecco and Terra Organica Prosecco Rosé, and also coincides with the brand removing capsules from all of its still wines sealed under cork.
Richard Dennis, commercial director of Watermill Wines, parent company of Terra Organica, tells the drinks business it’s something the brand has been thinking about doing for a long time.
“We wanted to make the change years ago, but bottling regulations prohibited this,” he says. “When our partner producer informed us of the changes in legislation last year, we all instantly agreed it was the right thing to do.”
Instant impact
Terra Organica had been weighing up a number of options to reduce its carbon footprint and, says Dennis, “this was by far the most significant way to make an instant impact… I actually think the bottles look better for it too.”
He says consumers are “now just starting to see the new version appear on shelves” at stockists including Ocado and Sainsbury’s.
“Sales continue to increase, which is great to see. Consumers are really buying into organic and appreciating the quality difference in the wines,” Dennis adds.
Made in the Prosecco DOC by producer Casa Vinicola Botter, Terra Organica Prosecco “shows bright white blossom and green apple aromas” and now its packaging reflects its sustainable credentials. The brand was recognised for its commitment to green packaging earlier this year with a silver medal win in this year’s The Drinks Business Design and Packaging Masters.
Terra Organica is a leading umbrella brand dedicated exclusively to organic, vegan and sustainably made wines. Included in its portfolio are wines made organically all over the world, including in Italy, Spain, Argentina and Chile, by some of the most respected winemakers and producers on the organic scene.
Its Terra Organic Sauvignon Blanc, for instance, is produced by Viña Garcés Silva in Aconcagua, Chile, while Terra Organica Malbec is made in Mendoza by Familia Zuccardi.
