Cornish brewery adds ‘Little Wave’ to non-alcoholic lager category
Cornwall’s Firebrand Brewing Co has launched its very first zero-alcohol lager marking a further move into the non-alcoholic beer trend.
The 0.5% ABV lager, named Little Wave, contains fewer than 35 calories per 440ml can and is also gluten-free and vegan-friendly.
The release of the brew follows last year’s launch of Firebrand’s Shorebreak alcohol-free hazy pale ale, taking inspiration for each of the beer’s names from the brewery’s Cornish roots.
Speaking to the drinks business about the decision to expand in the non-alcoholic beer category, Firebrand Brewing Co owner and head brewer Joe Thomson said: “Non-alcoholic beer is a rapidly growing segment within the beverage industry, providing a refreshing alternative for those who want the taste of beer without the alcohol. With evolving consumer preferences, there’s a significant opportunity to cater to health-conscious individuals, designated drivers, and those preferring a sober lifestyle. Adding Shorebreak and Little Wave to our range not only diversifies our portfolio but also aligns with global trends towards moderation and wellness.”
Thomson also alluded to the fact that Firebrand Brewing Co was a “huge advocate for mental health” and noted that “moderation” has always been part of its message and admitted he “plans to continue on the journey with both alcohol and non-alcohol options”.
According to Thomson, Little Wave “captures the essence of a traditional lager, offering a taste experience that mirrors its alcoholic counterparts” and, as such, is “a beverage that complements your lifestyle”.
He told db: “Living in Cornwall, beach trips are a part of my everyday life, non-alcoholic beer is perfect for those sunny beach barbecues with friends and family. I can enjoy the taste of a great beer and still drive home safely. It also offers craft beer enthusiasts an exciting way to explore new and innovative brews without the alcohol, opening a world of flavours and experiences for those looking to cut down on alcohol or simply enjoy a flavourful beverage. At Firebrand Brewing Co, we decided to launch Little Wave, our alcohol-free lager, following the overwhelming success of our alcohol-free hazy pale Shorebreak. We originally brewed Shorebreak because I wanted a healthier option to drink without giving up beer.”
Thomson revealed: “Given that our Helles Beach Cornish Lager is one of our most popular beers, it made perfect sense to create an alcohol-free lager option that maintains the same high quality and great taste. Both Shorebreak and Little Wave have under 35 calories per can, are vegan-friendly, and gluten-free making them perfect choices for health-conscious beer enthusiasts.”
Describing the importance of buying local and making eco-conscious decisions, Thomson added: “Supporting British-made beers goes beyond enjoying a great pint; it’s about investing in local craftsmanship, sustainability, and the economy. The UK’s rich brewing heritage offers diverse styles and flavours that reflect our unique cultural landscape. By choosing British-made beers, consumers support local farmers, brewers, and communities, while also contributing to a smaller carbon footprint and a more sustainable future.”
