BGI Ethiopia invests ETB500 million in Meta Abo Brewery
Brasseries et Glacières Internationales (BGI), a subsidiary of the Castel Group, has invested millions into its Meto Abo Brewery in Ethiopia.
The investment, which according to local reports, is to the tune of ETB500 million (US$9.3 million), will be used to remodel and expand the brewery as well as increase capacity and improve the brewery’s Meta Beer branding.
Last year, British drinks giant Diageo sold Meta Abo to BGI after it had purchased the brewer from the Ethiopian government in 2012 for US$225 million. During Diageo’s tenure, the brewery also benefitted from a US$119 million investment made by the drinks behemoth which had also helped bolster and expand Meta Abo’s bottling line.
Now, under the ownership of BGI, the company has laid out plans to buy new machineries and generators in an effort to further increase Meta Abo’s production capacity with the goal of making it one of the biggest breweries under its control.
BGI also owns other breweries in the area including: St. George Brewery; Zebidar Brewery; Hawassa Brewery; Kombolcha Brewery and Maychew Northern Brewery. Additionally, Castel Winery and Vineyard also falls under BGI’s control.
BGI, which has a significant market share in the Ethiopian beer market, also exports products across Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America.
