Find out why Sicily should be on your radar at a tasting in London

Be it volcanic slopes, organic wines and native grapes, rich reds to pale rosés and delicate whites, Sicily has it all, and much more – so find out why this island should be on your radar at a tasting in London this Thursday.

Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, offers the wine world such an array of thrilling options, at all price levels, and its potential is only just starting to be fully realised.

Furthermore, with its new Sicilia DOC, the opportunity for the wine buyer is starting to be promoted worldwide, as the island takes its Nocera and Nero d’Avola to a global audience.

As part of that, 30 of Sicily’s top producers are coming to London on Thursday to present their wines to the UK trade, bringing with them the seemingly endless array of styles on offer from this remarkable island – a viticultural haven in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea.

Among the exciting opportunities for the wine buyer are beautifully-balanced wines of all styles made with heat-resistant native grapes, along with affordable organic wines, and inimitable cellar-worthy drops too.

With its dry, rugged, hilly landscape, and ancient viticultural heritage, this is a place offering a diverse range of sustainably-produced, authentic wines that would excite the eco-minded and discerning drinker.

Not only does the tasting on Thursday offer the UK wine trade a chance to taste the best of Sicilia DOC being produced today, but also a snapshot of the island’s strengths through a masterclass taking in 12 fantastic wines.

Having spent a few days in Sicily earlier this year, I made a selection for presenting at 3pm during the tasting, taking in some of the island’s top wines from the white grape Grillo, as well as red variety Nero d’Avola, as well as some other exciting options, from Sicily’s answer to Beaujolais, Provencal rosé and Rhône reds.

Expect to be surprised by the quality on offer, the ancient grape varieties being rescued, and the fresh-tasting nature of the drops from an island that’s just 90 miles from the African coast.

So don’t miss out, and sign up for the tasting here, and register your interest for the masterclass here.

Sicily is Italy’s ‘biggest vineyard’ covering almost 100,000 hectares – almost three times larger than the area of plantings in New Zealand.

It also has 42,000ha managed sustainably according to strict rules, which including a ban on herbicides.
