ProWein partners with caravan companies to showcase wine tourism opportunities

ProWein has joined forces with Caravan Salon Düsseldorf and Caravaning Industry Verband (CIVD) to offer insight into how mobile vacationing can complement the burgeoning wine tourism industry.

The German Wine Institute and Geisenheim University estimated that in 2019 wine tourism in Germany generated total annual sales of €29.9 billion. There is a pervading belief that caravanning could open up new perspectives within this blossoming sector. Indeed, motorhome pitches are becoming increasingly common at wine estates as more and more tourists embrace the open road.

Daniel Onggowinarso, managing director of CIVD, said that “wine-growing regions are popular travel destinations and more and more wine estates are linking their ranges with accommodation options for vacationers with caravans or motorhomes. What could be nicer than winding down from the day surrounded by vines with a bottle of regional wine in your mobile living room?”

Michael Degen, executive director at Messe Düsseldorf, the venue for ProWein, celebrated the partnership. “I’m delighted we have succeeded in combining two seemingly so contrary themes here, thereby generating valuable synergies for ProWein and CARAVAN SALON. We definitely aim to intensify this cooperation”.

Visitors to ProWein will be able to broaden their wine tourism horizons from May 15 to 17 in Hall 1, Stand D 80 and explore how mobile holiday accommodation can present new opportunities. There will also be “roadsurfer spots” at ProWein, which will serve as a booking platform for individual motorhome pitches.

The wine tourism boom can also be seen in the establishment of the Wine Travel Awards, which recognises the best wine trips and tours from across the globe. Wine-growing estates, tour operators and wine writers are all eligible to enter and be judged by a jury of twelve leading experts.
