Krug releases 169th edition Grande Cuvée Champagne in Hong Kong

The latest 169th edition of Krug Grande Cuvée is released in Hong Kong and Macau.

The new edition was composed around the harvest of 2013. The season began with a seemingly endless winter, followed by a rainy and cool spring. While summer was hot and sunny, the season was also marked by hailstorms that took their toll on the vineyards.

To create this edition, cellar master Julie Cavil looked to accentuate the year’s fullness and beautiful aromatic elegance with different plots’ wines from 11 different years. The blend, comprising 146 wines, spans from the youngest vintage 2013, while the oldest dates back to 2000. Its final composition is 43% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 22% Meunier. Reserve wines from the House’s extensive library made up 40% of the final blend. The remarkable Édition achieved its remarkable expression and elegance over a stay of around seven years in Krug’s cellars, and overall, 20 years of careful craftsmanship were needed for the 169th re-creation of the most generous expression of Champagne.

Cavil commented: “After two challenging years, the harvest of 2013 gave the House’s oldest plots the conditions they needed to shine. In this Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée, you will find beautiful wines from our plots in Ambonnay and Ricey. The Chardonnays of the year were magnificently fresh and pure, with great intensity and length. The Pinot Noirs were powerful and long with discreet fruit, while the Meuniers added structure, tension and vivacity. To complete the blend, different plots’ wines were selected from throughout the first decade of the millennium, including Meuniers from Saint-Gemme, which contributed warmth, opulence, and texture, contrasting with the chiselled Meuniers of 2013.”

The house describes the nose of the Champagne as “aromas of flowers in full bloom, as well as ripe, dried, and citrus fruits, marzipan, and gingerbread”, with a palate displays a combination of “hazelnut, nougat, barley sugar, jellied and citrus fruits, almonds, brioche, and honey”.

The Krug Encounter experience is available in the house’s major markets, such as Japan, USA, UK, France, Italy, Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore, Spain and the Nordics.

The new edition is now available at partnered retailers such as Watson’s Wine, The Fine Wine Experience, Avize Wine Cellar, burgundy etc, and city’super.

To celebrate the launch, the house launches a digital immersive experience named Krug Encounters 2021. The immersive Music experience is available online to connect customers around the world.  The binaural audio technology used will envelop guests in a journey to discover the house’s craftsmanship, winemaking and the story of 169th edition Krug Grande Cuvée Champagne.
