This bar chain is giving away free cocktails in exchange for tinned food

The Alchemist is offering customers a cocktail when they bring a tin of food to the restaurant and bar later this month.

Nationwide chain The Alchemist has teamed up with local charities to help raise awareness on the issue of food poverty.

Customers can hand over one tin of non-perishable food on Thursday 29 August, which will be passed on to local food banks, in exchange for a cocktail.

The Alchemist will offer a cocktail called ‘The Colour Changing One’ to every customer that donates a food item. The cocktail – a staple at the chain – contains Grey Goose vodka, Briottet apple, soda, citrus and “magic”, according to an emailed statement.

Customers can and are encouraged to make larger donations. All food items will be taken to local charities and given to those in need. The Alchemist only requires that the items are tinned, dried, or packaged and in date and unopened.

Hannah Plumb, head of restaurants at the Alchemist, said: “these are truly fantastic local charities tackling food poverty across the UK which is an issue we’re particularly passionate about at The Alchemist. This activity is a fun and engaging way to encourage customers to donate to their local food banks, who are in need of donations now more than ever.”

The Alchemist’s campaign comes at a time of increasing food poverty for the UK, with the BBC reporting that the Trussell Trust has experienced a 19% annual increase in food supplies it has donated in the last year.
