Glasgow couple make £830 on whisky miniature they nearly threw away

A Glaswegian couple have made over £800 on a whisky miniature they nearly threw away.

The couple’s miniature collection sold for over £2,000 at auction.

The anonymous couple discovered their small fortune after taking in a selection of whisky bottles they’d amassed over the years to a local auction house.

The couple told Laurie Black, whisky expert at McTears Auctioneers, that they had initially planned to throw the miniatures away, but decided to get an expert’s opinion on their value.

They were shocked to learn that one bottle contained an extremely rare whisky produced by Laphroaig distillery on the island of Islay worth £830.

“They had quite a few interesting bottles,” Black told Glasgow Live, “but the Laphroaig immediately stood out.”

The 20 Under Proof bottle, which dates back to the 1960s, is actually one of the most expensive miniatures in the world.

“We knew it would attract a lot of interest from collectors,” said Black. “When the bidding started at McTear’s Rare and Collectable Whisky auction, it was clear it was going to make a good price.”

Fierce bidding in an auction of the couple’s bottles saw the Laphroaig sell to a Scottish private collector for a staggering £830, while their entire miniatures collection went for £2,100.

“I think they are quite pleased they decided to seek an expert opinion.”
