Guigal buys historic Châteauneuf estate

Esteemed Rhône wine producer Maison E. Guigal has acquired Domaine de Nalys, one of the oldest estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, for an undisclosed sum.

Dating back to the 17th century, the 50-hectare estate produces reds and whites from the Southern Rhône appellation and is particularly known for its whites.

Domaine de Nalys, which was sold to Guigal by French insurance group Groupe des Assurances Mutuelles Agricole, works with the 13 grapes allowed in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in Nalys, Sénéchal and La Crau.

It is thought that Guigal paid in the region of €45 million for the estate as sales of this kind in Châteauneuf are rare.

Philippe Guigal described the sale to as a “coup de coeur”.

“Our family is very proud to join Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s appellation, and we look forward to getting to work,” he said.

Guigal produces wine from across the Rhône but is best known for its single vineyard wines from Côte Rôtie known as the ‘La Las’ – La Turque, La Mouline and La Landonne.
