Coppola launches Diamond Collection in cans

Coppola is continuing to ride the canned-wine wave in the US with the release of its Diamond Collection whites in the convenient single-serve format.

Coppola’s Diamond Collection whites now come in 250ml cans

Launched yesterday in California by the Francis Ford Coppola Winery were the Diamond Collection whites, comprising a Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon Blanc, in 250ml aluminum cans.

According to the company, the move solidifies the winery’s position as the leading premium wine producer in the canned category.

“It was Francis’s instinct and creativity that first brought wine-in-a-can to the forefront of the wine industry with the introduction of the Sofia Mini cans more than a decade ago,” says Corey Beck, Francis Ford Coppola Winery’s president and director of winemaking.

Continuing, he said, “For a category that’s accelerated so rapidly over the years, consumers are still loyal to the Coppola brands they trust and admire, because they know we will deliver the same premium quality, consistency, and authenticity they know and love in a bottle, into a can.”

In 2002, the winery began producing canned wine, and in 2004 the company claims to have single-handedly launched the canned wine category with the debut of the Sofia Minis (187ml aluminum cans filled with Sofia Blanc de Blancs sparkling wine), in an effort to make premium wine more accessible.

Over the years, the canned phenomenon has grown rapidly as other producers have entered the category and consumers have begun to see the benefits of these single-serve options.

Indeed, as reported by the drinks business last month, American grocery store chain Trader Joe’s has sold out of its canned wine range, Simpler Wines, after unprecedented demand for the $3.99 four-packs.

Furthermore, the value of canned wine sales hit US$15 million last year, though the category still only accounts for less than 1% of the market.

Coppola’s Diamond cans will be highlighted on 4 August at the winery’s Shine, Splash, Shindig mid-summer pool party event, taking place from 7-10pm.

The 250ml cans are available in a 4-pack through the winery’s website and come with an SRP of $19.99.
