Winemakers ask Russia for Crimea note
Crimean winemakers have designed a commemorative banknote featuring images of its vineyards intended for circulation in Russia.
Mock-ups of a 200-ruble banknote, featuring Crimea’s Ayu-Dag mountain on one side and vineyards on the other, were sent to Russia’s Central Bank with a request to release the note as tender, according to reports by the Moscow Times.
The request came on behalf of the Russian Winemakers’ Union and the Legends of Crimea wine group.
The wine company’s general director, Mikhail Shtyrlin, who is also vice-president of the Russian Winemakers Union, said the note would “raise the patriotic spirit of society and draw attention of Crimea as a centre of winemaking.”
The request follows an announcement by Russia’s Central Bank that it would be releasing a 100-ruble note to celebrate Russia’s annexation of Crimea. Commemorative 10-ruble coins have already been released.

Russia does not currently have a 200-ruble note, worth about £2, in circulation.
Crimea was annexed from Ukraine by Russia in March.
