Cocaine stash found hidden in wine shipment

US customs officers have seized 35 pounds of cocaine that was found hidden in a wine shipping container at Port Newark in New Jersey.

As reported by, according to the US Customs and Border Protection service, the cocaine was found in a black duffel bag in a container that had arrived from Panama.

The discovery was made by sniffer dogs on 28 October when the container was singled out for a routine inspection while being unloaded. The official use of the container was to ship 1,050 cartons of wine from Australia.

The container had been taken off a ship in Panama then reloaded onto another vessel, the MSC Federica, before being shipped to Port Newark.

Packed in 13 duct-taped bricks weighing 35 pounds, the cocaine is now in the hands of special agents from Homeland Security Investigations.

“The CBP officers assigned to the Port of Newark take their responsibility of disrupting the flow of illicit narcotics to the United States very seriously,” New York field operations director Robert E. Perez said.
