Rogan to replace Ramsay at Claridge’s

Southampton-born, Michelin-starred chef Simon Rogan is to take over from Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s when the London hotel reopens its restaurant next spring.

The name of the restaurant has yet to be decided but will not follow Ramsay’s “name above the door” format.

Nicknamed the “king of foraging”, Rogan holds two Michelin stars at his flagship restaurant, L’Enclume in Cumbria, which was named Best Restaurant in the UK by the Good Food Guide 2014.

The 45-year-old is a champion of modern British cuisine made from fresh, local, seasonal ingredients, which he sources from his farm in Cumbria.

According to the Evening Standard, many of the ingredients at the new restaurant will be sourced from Rogan’s 12-acre farm. Rogan is also keen to be restore the Michelin star the restaurant lost in 2010.

”There was never any question about what I would do once I got the call. It’s real ‘pinch yourself’ material. It’s like playing for Real Madrid and then getting signed for Barcelona but being allowed to play for both teams,” Rogan told the paper.

Gordon Ramsay ended his 12-year tenure at the restaurant this summer, with Rogan fending off competition from the likes of celebrated chefs Hélène Darroze and Ramsay protégée Marcus Wareing to secure the post.

“We’re  very  excited  about  bringing Simon Rogan to Claridge’s. He’s  a  home-grown talent and we believe his inspiring culinary concept for the hotel will lead the way for a new dining direction,” said Claridge’s general manager Thomas Kochs.

“I’ve long been looking for a permanent London home and in Claridge’s I have found a true partnership of creativity and excellence,” said Rogan.

“My team and I are looking forward to the challenge of marrying my culinary style with phenomenal heritage – this is a massive honour and we are focused and  determined  to  create  a  truly  outstanding  restaurant,” he added.

In addition to L’Enclume, Rogan ran a successful two-year “pop-up”, Roganic, in Marylebone, which closed in June.

Outside of the kitchen, Rogan starred in the Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon’s popular TV series The Trip.
