Budweiser launches Facebook-friendly ‘Buddy Cup’

US beer giant Budweiser has launched a new glass, which contains a chip with a link to Facebook, so you can become friends with anyone you toast.

The new glass, called a Buddy Cup, contains a chip and a printed code on the bottom. The code, which is similar to a QR code, is activated using a smartphone and will then link to your Facebook page.

Once you have an activated cup in your hand, you will automatically become Facebook friends with anyone else who you toast who has also set up their Buddy Cup.

The Buddy Cup was created by Agencia Africa in partnership with Bolha, a digital innovation studio in Sao Paulo.

Sergio Gordilho, chief creative officer at Agencia Africa, said: “Innovation is in Budweiser’s DNA. Its platforms are constantly surprising consumers with the best there is in terms of premium experiences. The Buddy Cup is another idea bringing the brand even closer to its consumers and opening new levels of interaction for them.”

Budweiser holds a variety of sponsored events, concerts and festivals each year and the company said it will give away the Buddy Cup at these gatherings. The idea being that each person who enters a Budweiser event would then connect their Facebook profile with the cup’s chip.

The Buddy Cup will also help Budweiser to improve social media interaction with its customers.
