Big brands supply Queen’s Jubilee picnic

Cobra beer, Heston Blumenthal and Moët & Chandon Champagne have been chosen as suppliers for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee picnic.

The special picnic will be given to the 12,000 people attending the Diamond Jubilee Concert that evening.

In terms of drinking options, Cobra draught beer will be served to guests, as will bottles of water from Hildon and Moët & Chandon Champagne.

Each guest on 4 June will be presented with an individual hamper containing a menu designed by Heston Blumenthal.

The attendees will be given British dishes such as country garden soup, salmon smoked in Lapsang Souchong tea, and “Sandringham strawberry crumble crunch”.

Other items on the menu include Diamond Jubilee Chicken, which is a new take on the creamy dish created in 1953 to celebrate the Queen’s Coronation.

Reacting to the announcement, Lord Bilimoria, founder and chairman of Cobra Beer, a joint-venture with Molson Coors, said: “It is a matter of great pride for all of us at Cobra to be the supplier of beer for The Queen’s Jubilee picnic and concert.

“Cobra has existed for just over one third of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, and in that time it has become a household name.

“Given Cobra’s Indian heritage, we feel our presence at these celebrations also serves to represent the Commonwealth, an institution which we know Her Majesty values greatly.

“We know that this will bring a great deal of pride not just to the UK’s 2.5 million-strong Asian community, but also to the 1.2 billion people in India and the 30m people of Indian origin worldwide.

“Cobra will be the perfect accompaniment to the special picnic being provided by Heston Blumenthal and Waitrose, and to the regal atmosphere of this event.”

In the UK, Cobra is brewed in Burton-upon-Trent and it is continuing to broaden its South Asian market after it signed up with Molson Coors Brewing Company in a US$35 million joint venture.

The drinks business does wonder however why the event organisers didn’t opt for a British-owned brewer, or even a beer made in the capital, such as the Meantime London Lager.
