Meursault goes molecular

London restaurant L’Etranger is targeting a younger, livelier audience with the launch next month of Meursault, a new bar, lounge and dining room.

Due to open on 6 February, the venue is located next door to L’Etranger on Gloucester Road. Chef Jerome Tauvron sticks to the same style of French and Japanese-inspired cuisine here, although in keeping with Meursault’s more youthful feel, the cocktail list takes on a more molecular twist.

Those in search of a lighter snack can choose from the range of sharing platters, which includes sashimi, foie gras, tartar, mini burgers or caviar.

Larger dishes continue the fusion theme, with options such as caramelised Alaskan black cod with miso; alablone and foie gras toban yaki, and one dish which sounds like an entire menu in itself: pan fried foie gras with cinnamon and date pudding, yuzu infused caramelised endive and Lagavulin dark chocolate ice cream.

Setting itself apart from its sister restaurant, Meursault, named after the protagonist in Albert Camus’ 1942 novel L’Etranger, will also feature 40 homemade desserts, including an extensive range of macaroons, ice cream and sorbets.

In addition to the 1,600 bin wine list, the venue offers a sake selection and a number of big name Champagnes available by the glass, including Ruinart blanc de blancs served from magnum with a crystallised ice cube.

For the more scientifically minded, there are options such as “Bang Bang You Shot Me Down”, which for £16.50 promises a trio of liquid nitrogen crumbled sorbet Mojitos muddled with mixed citrus wedges, fresh mint and a base layer of various liqueur infused wild berries, then finished with a carbonated caramel sprinkle.

Meursault will be open daily from 5pm until late.
