Sycamore Gap beer created

A new beer has been created by First and Last Brewery to commemorate the felled Sycamore Gap tree and encourage new plantings.

The Northumberland-based brewery has produced Fallen Giant, a 4.5% ABV pale ale that is available to the local on-trade, bottle shops, as well as directly from the firm’s taproom, shop and online store.

According to the brewer’s website it is a “soft and fruity rye pale ale” with “a complex multigrain malt bill with Ekuanot & Amarillo hops” and aromas “of pithy orange, papaya and marmalade with a dry, slightly spicy finish from the rye malt”.

It follows the infamous Sycamore Gap tree, located alongside Hadrian’s Wall near Crag Lough, being felled in September. The destruction of the tree, which previously featured in Hollywood films such as Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, created an international news story and outcry.

Sam Kelly, co-owner of the First & Last Brewery, told the Hexham Courant: “Like many people, we were shocked and saddened by the felling of the tree at Sycamore Gap on Hadrian’s Wall.

“We decided to channel our feelings into positive action. 100% of the profits from this beer will be donated to the Woodland Trust to plant new trees.”
