Opened in 2017, Mere’s name is a nod to Galetti’s late grandmother, and is pronounced ‘Mary’ in Samoan.

In September it was announced that former-Oxeye restaurateur Sven-Hanson Britt would be taking the helm as Mere’s head chef. Britt’s Instagram shows that a couple of weeks ago he embarked on a trip to Samoa to research dishes for Mere’s menu.

While the restaurant never gained a Michelin Star, the Michelin Guide called the dishes “assured, colourful and creative, with well-judged flavours”.

The closure was announced on the restaurant’s Instagram account: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the closure of Mere restaurant- but we feel this is the right time after seven years!”

“We want to take this opportunity to wholeheartedly thank Alastair Storey and everyone who has supported us and our loyal patrons and dedicated staff throughout this journey,” it continued. “To our customers we thank you for your loyal and joyous visits. We hope to raise one last glass together before we close. Our last service will be Tuesday 16 April 2024.”

“To our Mere Team, the greatest gratitude for all your devotion, passion, love and laughter shared together, you will always be Family to Us. Here’s to the next adventure!”

Just a few weeks prior to the announcement, another Instagram post celebrated the restaurant’s seventh anniversary, with a toast to “many more”.

Galetti has not revealed plans for another restaurant just yet.

The news came just before it was announced that Galetti’s mentor Michel Roux Jr would be opening his first restaurant since Le Gavroche.
