Jason Momoa stars in new Guinness ad

Game of Thrones and Aquaman actor Jason Momoa both co-directed and starred in the latest ad for Diageo-owned stout brand Guinness, premiering just in time for St. Patrick’s Day.

For Momoa, the partnership is the realisation of a dream he has had for more than a decade: “I’ve wanted to direct for Guinness for 12 years now. They have, in my opinion, the best commercials in the world. It was fun pitching this idea to them, they loved it; and now, it’s turned into a dream job.”

Called A lovely day for a Guinness, the idea involves Momoa, who was born in Hawaii, being shocked to discover that he is in fact 2% Irish, prompting him to run through the streets and burst into an Irish bar where he shouts about his newly-discovered heritage before picking up a pint of the black stuff and breaking the fourth wall to tell the audience “I knew it”.

Guinness US brand director Joyce He said: “Finally working with Jason has been so special. For years, he’s been a huge fan of ours and of course we’re huge fans of his. But this is more than just another partnership: together with Jason, we are starting a new chapter in our iconic story that will bring Guinness to more people, places and celebrations. I can’t wait to keep sharing with the world what we already know: any day is a lovely day for a Guinness.”

Making a cameo apperance is Momoa’s mother, Coni, who does, according to Wikipedia, have some Irish ancestry. In the advert, when Momoa reveals his heritage, she says: “hey, then kiss me.”

“It was my first acting experience, so I was a little nervous,” she explained, but shared that she “had a lot of fun” on set.

The advert will be rolled out across social media and US television.
