Marcus Jordan served these two fine wines at Thanksgiving dinner

The son of basketball star Michael Jordan revealed which top-end wines were on his Thanksgiving table this year.

Marcus Jordan, who owns boutique fashion store The Trophy Room in Orlando, has revealed the ultra-premium wines he served during Thanksgiving celebrations last week.

“Larsa Pippen cooks. I supply the beverages,” he wrote of the get-together he hosted with The Real Housewives of Miami star, who Jordan has officially been dating since January 2023.

For pre- and post-dinner drinks there was his father Michael’s Cincoro añejo Tequila, aged from 24 to 28 months.

Michael Jordan, who led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships and recently sold his majority ownership in the Charlotte Hornets when the team was offloaded for US$3 billion in August, launched his Tequila brand in 2019.

Accompanying the Thanksgiving turkey and pumpkin pie at Jordan’s dinner party were bottles of wine from a cult Napa producer, and one of the most prestigious wineries in Spain.

The latest vintage (2019) from top-tier Californian winery Opus One is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (78%), Merlot (8%), Petit Verdot (6%), Cabernet Franc (6%) and Malbec (2%), aged for 19 months in new oak.

Opus One describes the 2019 as having “intense aromas of black plum, blueberry, black currant, and dried rose petals, accentuated by mineral undertones” and states that drinkers can also expect notes of espresso, cocoa and “delicate dark chocolate”.

The 2019 debuted on La Place de Bordeaux in September 2022 for £3,024 (US$3,824) per dozen bottles. More stock has since been released for around €265 (US$289) per bottle, according to global marketplace Liv-ex.

The value of the highly collectable Opus One quickly rises between vintages, with the 2018 currently selling for US$525 for a single bottle.

However Napa did not get all the attention at Jordan’s Thanksgiving festivities, with the luxury sportswear entrepreneur also pouring Vega Sicilia Ribera Del Duero Valbuena 5 (2017) for guests.

Produced in Ribera del Duero, northern Spain, only 170,071 standard-sized bottles of this wine were made due to severe frosts that hit the region during the 2017 vintage. Some of Vega Sicilia’s vineyards were damaged by the frost, though the producer managed to rescue the vintage through using frost towers.

A blend of hand-picked Tinto Fino Tempranillo (94%) and Merlot (6%), the 2017 vintage currently retails for £330 (US$416) for a case of three bottles (US$138 per bottle) from Berry Bros & Rudd.

According to Vega Sicilia, which is one of Spain’s most prestigious wine estates, the 2017 expression is “a more mature, juicy and voluptuous expression” than previous vintages, and while it is drinkable now the wine can be kept for 25 years in the correct cellar conditions.
