There are many names that might spring to mind when consider the establishments: Le Gavroche (soon to be closed), Ynyshir, Core by Clare Smyth, to name a few.

However, in the Uber Eats competition to find the best eatery in the UK, it was a sandwich shop that took the top spot, and the £100,000 prize that came with it. The short list was decided by a public vote, with the overall winner determined by a judging panel which included chef Monica Galetti and Great British Bake Off‘s Prue Leith.

Sandwich Sandwich currently has five locations in Bristol (and also sells its wares via Uber Eats). Among the hefty, doorstop sandwiches it sells are the Tandoori Chicken (with tandoori mayo, cucumber, iceberg lettuce & mint yoghurt) and The Whole Hog (roasted pork loin, pulled pork shoulder, sausage patty, crackling, apple sauce & stuffing gravy). For Christmas, Sandwich Sandwich will be offering The Hot Christmas Stack, consisting of thick cut turkey breast, pulled turkey thigh, crispy maple bacon, sage and onion sausage stuffing, bacon crumble, cranberry jam, thyme and rosemary mayo, enveloped within a brioche bun with turkey dipping gravy on the side.

Leith said of the final shortlist of restaurants: “I was hugely impressed by all of the finalists, and by the food they served on the judging day. That from Sandwich Sandwich was particularly imaginative, inventive and delicious.”

In an Instagram post from the chain’s official account, it said: “We are completely overwhelmed with pride to have been named the nation wide Uber Eats Restaurant of the Year 2023. A sentence that we could never have dreamed of saying and to be totally honest – it still hasn’t quite sunk in yet. This award serves as a significant testament to the dedication and effort that has been invested in all of our hard work. We owe it all to our team and our lovely customers who are exceptionally loyal.”

It also mentioned that the prize money would be used to fuel its plans to expand into other cities, including London.
