Bonhams to auction ‘outstanding’ Burgundy collection
A collection of rare Burgundies from private collections are the headline lots in Bonham’s upcoming two day Fine & Rare Wine sale, including a rare six-bottle case of Romanée-Conti 2002, which is being sold for charity.
The auction features bottles from some highly sought-after producers, which Bonhams senior international director of wine Richard Harvey MW said included four “stunning” collections of the most desirable Domaines and vintages from Burgundy, as well as some fine wines from Bordeaux and Italy.
“The market’s appetite for these wines continues to be strong and shows no sign of abating,” he added.
Among the highlights is the rare six-bottle case of Romanée-Conti 2002, which is being sold in aid of Cure Parkinson’s (estimate: £100,000 – 140,000), along with wines from Domaine Roumier, which were purchased direct from the Domaine by the vendor’s father, including seven vintages of Musigny Grand Cru including the 1999 and 2002 vintages (each with an estimate of £9,000 – 10,000 per bottle). Others in the collection include a six-bottle case of Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru, Amoureuses 2005 (estimate: £16,000 – 19,000); eight vintages of Bonnes-Mares, including a six-bottle case of the 2005 vintage (estimate: £10,000-12,000); and 12 bottles of Domaine Armand Rousseau, Chambertin 1990 (estimate: £40,000–50,000).
The sale also includes an exceptional collection of Domaine René Engel, that was purchased on release and shipped direct from the Domaine, including: six-bottles of Grands-Echézeaux 2002 (estimate: £14,000–16,000); six-bottles of Clos-Vougeot 1999 (estimate: £12,000–14,000); and a quartet of lots from the 2004 vintage, which was the last vintage produced by Philippe Engel, grandson of the founder, before he died the Domaine was sold, plus six bottles of Grands-Echézeaux 2002, Domaine René Engel (estimate: £14,000 – 16,000).
The sale also features some wines from Bordeaux in the sale, including a private collection of Chateau Lafite Rothschild spanning the 2003 to 2017 vintages, and Carruades de Lafite, shipped direct from Bordeaux as well as fifteen vintages of Chateau d’Yquem from the cellar of a retired wine-trade professional, and Italian wines including four vintages of Sassicaia and ten vintages of Ridge Monte Bello.
