How cool is the new Wes Anderson lager?
US filmmaker Wes Anderson has collaborated with Delaware-based Dogfish Head Craft Brewery on a beer to celebrate his new film Asteroid City.
The partnership, which has resulted in the Delaware-based brewery creating a limited-edition 4.2% ABV beer named Asteroid City Lager, is set to enliven the palates of both fans of Anderson’s films as well as beer drinkers.
The creation of the beer, in name, in recipe and in its artwork is a genial hat tip to the film’s theme and features packaging designed by Anderson. To give context to the brew, Anderson’s new film Asteroid City takes place in 1955 in a fictional American desert town and, according to reports, focuses on the itinerary of a junior stargazer convention being disrupted by world-changing events.
To reflect the elements of the film, Asteroid City Lager has been brewed with regeneratively-grown pilsner malt, Tuxpeno corn malt and Zuper Saazer hops along with a mid-20th century Pennsylvania lager yeast as a nod to the 1950s era during which Asteroid City takes place. The beer’s label – developed in collaboration with Anderson – features artwork centred on one of the film’s images; a billboard advertisement for a billboard advertisement.
Speaking about the tie-up, Dogfish Head brewer and founder Sam Calagione said: “The magical, whimsical worlds Wes Anderson has created in his movies have been touchstones for our off-centred brand throughout the years. From the playful and colourful design of our canal-front hotel, the Dogfish Inn, to the vibrant and refreshing vibes of this Asteroid City Lager beer, Wes’ work inspires us, and this collaborative beer is a liquid celebration of this new frontier Wes and the entire team behind ‘Asteroid City’ have created.”
Asteroid City Lager will be available during select screenings of Asteroid City at Alamo Drafthouse locations across the US, including New York City, Austin and Denver. Tickets for Alamo Drafthouse screenings of Asteroid City are on sale via the Drafthouse box office.
Additionally, attendees can enjoy one of the cinema’s ‘Asteroid City Chili Supper Screenings’ where a custom pre-set menu will be paired with Asteroid City Lager. Fans will also be able to buy Asteroid City Lager on draught and in four packs containing 16oz cans from Dogfish Head’s coastal Delaware locations, as well as via a selection of regional retailers.
