Two thirds of Brits would prefer to serve Prosecco at their wedding, new research finds
Champagne has been voted the most popular sparkling wine when it comes to taste, but Brits chose Prosecco over the French fizz to serve on their big day, according to wedding planning website Hitched.
Hitched.co.uk has delved into the bubbly-drinking habits of more than 2,780 thirsty Brits, to learn more about people’s favourite tipples for the big day.
A poll of the wedding planning website’s Instagram followers found that more than half (55%) of Brits opt for Prosecco over Champagne.
Much of this comes down to pricing, with 42% citing that they prefer the Italian tipple comes down to cost.
In fact, when it came to taste, just a third (32%) of respondents said they prefer Prosecco based on flavour alone.
Online searches for “Prosecco” have declined steadily over the last five years, with around 50,000 Brits researching the Italian fizz online every month in 2022, versus 135,000 searches per month in 2018. Meanwhile, Google searches for “Champagne” have remained steady for the last five years, with 50,000 searches per month.
Champagne towers have taken off on social media platform TikTok, with more than 30 million views recorded for the hashtag #ChampagneTower. But the trend clearly isn’t for everyone, with just 6% of those surveyed saying they would consider having a Champagne (or Prosecco) tower at their wedding.
Last year, the average spend on catering a wedding was £4,680 – an increase of 20% on pre-pandemic spend. In this cost of living crisis, it’s no surprise nearlyweds are having to make decisions to reduce the overall cost of their big days, especially as the latest National Wedding Survey revealed that almost half (48%) of newlyweds in 2021 went over their wedding budget, and less than 1 in 10 managed to come in under budget.
