Sharp’s releases beer brewed on International Women’s Day
Sharp’s Brewery, the makers of Doom Bar owned by Molson Coors, has released a limited edition mixed-fruit pale ale brewed on March 8.
Proud to join @IWCBD to help celebrate @womensday. Our awesome female colleagues have teamed up to brew a special ‘one-off’ pilot plant beer as part of the #UniteBrew event – as well as enjoying a day of interactive talks and games. #IWD2022https://t.co/bhM8zdPlpI pic.twitter.com/pPC3PJmQa6

Rock ‘A’ Berry was made on International Women’s Day by 15 female employees from all sectors of the brewery. The undertaking was tied in to International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day, a global event run in conjunction with International Women’s Day, when women either working in or interested in beer create their own brews.
Each of the women (or “Brewesses”, as Sharp’s dubs them) involved in the brew brought fresh fruit to be added to the mash. New world hops were also used to complement the citrus and berry aromas, and extra pale malt was chosen so as not to overpower the fresh fruit added. Sharp’s’ HR business partner, Nina Griggs, said that “it was brilliant to work as a team and to brew our very own beer.”
Head brewer, Aaron McClure, did not have a hand in this particular brew, but described it as “a great success” and said that the beer was “tasting fantastic!”
The 4.5% ABV ale will be available from four Cornish pubs, including The Mariners in Rock, where the Sharp’s brewery is located. A 9 pint mini cask is also available online for £29.99, though Sharp’s is currently waiting to restock after it quickly sold out.
The treatment of women in the male-dominated brewing industry has generated much debate. Promoting beers brewed by women has become an increasingly popular means for companies to demonstrate their support for women.
For example, St. Austell Brewery, fewer than 20 miles from Sharp’s, had 25 female employees, under brewing director Georgina Young, collaborate on a gin-infused beer, “Gineous”, for this year’s IWD. 100% of the profits of Gineous were donated to Young Women’s Trust.
