AB InBev in latest craft buyout

AB InBev has purchased Brazilian craft beer brand Colorado, continuing the trend of big brewers buying lucrative boutique brands.

Ambev SA, AB InBev’s Brazilian subsidiary and the country’s largest drinks company, said it had bought the popular brewer for an undisclosed sum.

The acquisition is a further example of AB InBev diversifying its portfolio of local brands amid a period of flatlining sales volumes in the important Brazilian market.

In February, Ambev bought Brazilian craft brewer Wäls, incorporating it into its Bohemia division, news agency Reuters reports.

North of the equator, and AB InBev is making the same moves in its home market, the US. In January, the company acquired one of Washington state’s fastest growing craft breweries, Elysian, for an undisclosed sum.

Colorado, from Brazil’s Sao Paulo state, has been operating for 18 years, and exports its flavoured beers, internationally. The brewer had revenue of about 19 million Reals (£3.9 million) last year, according to analysts cited by Reuters.
