UK celebrates with gin and fizz

Gin and sparkling wine have emerged as the chief beneficiaries of this summer’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The latest WSTA Report shows that against an overall 1% decline in UK off-trade alcohol sales (12 months to end of July 2012), gin saw a 2% volume increase.

The same period saw sparkling wine category enjoy 5% volume growth, with a 12% surge during the final 12 weeks.

The report also noted that sales of wine over £5 now represent more than 33% of total off-trade volume sales.

In the UK on-trade, where overall alcohol sales fell by 3% during the 12 months to 7 July 2012, consumers’ celebratory mood saw Champagne sales increase by 10% during the final 12 weeks of the period.

Commenting on the report, WSTA chief executive Miles Beale said: “The mood of the nation has been very positive over the summer thanks to the Royal Jubilee and the build-up to the Olympics, so it’s perhaps not surprising to see an increase in sales of those products associated with celebration.

“Even though overall alcohol sales are declining, some categories are showing encouraging signs of recovery which is good news for the trade.”

The WSTA Report is compiled using data supplied by Nielsen, CGA Strategy and the Wilson Drinks Report.
