Retail is the economy keyholder

The retail sector is the best vehicle for new jobs and growth, according to the British Retail Consortium’s chairman.

Luke Mayhew addressed an audience of more than 1,000 people in London last week, where he urged the UK government to “actively encourage enterprise and push back bureaucratic creep.”

Speaking one month before the government’s Comprehensive Spending Review is revealed, Mayhew added: “Retail is one of the economy’s best vehicles for new jobs and growth.

Despite the focus on gloom and doom, retailers are employing thousands more people than a year ago,” he added.

However, Mayhew warned that he was concerned about the “potential collateral damage” to the private sector. He commented: “To pick up some of the inevitable unemployment in the public sector, we need an environment that encourages private sector investment and growth.”

Mayhew, a former managing director of John Lewis, made his comments at the BRC’s Annual Retail Industry Dinner.
