Super Tuscan turns to anti-counterfeiting technology

Tuscan estate Ornellaia has decided to equip its top wines with a Radio Frequency Identification System to prevent the creation of fake bottles.

The technology will be implemented to the estate’s Masseto cuvée from the 2006 vintage, and to Ornellaia from the 2007 vintage.
The Radio Frequency Identification System (RFID) has two functions, it allows one to trace the distribution of the wines (to prevent any black market activity) and it provides a guarantee of authenticity.
The RFID comes in the form of an electronic chip on the back label, with a special system installed at the point of dispatch.
The technology is currently in its experimental stage, and if it proves successful, the technology will also be used for wines destined for the North American market.
