Exports of Portuguese still wine to the UK grew in value by 4% in 2015, which the president of ViniPortugal says indicates a positive change in quality perceptions of the country’s wines.
Portuguese wine built on its recent upward curve in the UK last year with a 19% rise in bottled still wine export volumes and 64% growth for sparkling wines.
Wines of Portugal has highlighted a discrepancy between its export statistics and sales figures from FMCG data agencies, claiming that the country’s UK sales are “misrepresented”.
Wine presenter Olly Smith highlighted the “great value” offered by Portuguese wine as he unveiled his 50 Great Portuguese Wines.
ViniPortugal is using strong recent growth figures as a springboard to shift its UK focus towards strengthening consumer awareness of its wines.
Portugal needs stronger branding for its wines, regions and grape varieties, concluded a UK trade panel hosted by ViniPortugal at LIWF 2012.
ViniPortugal are planning to boost sales of Portuguese wine in the UK by 8% over the next three years.
