Rioja announces inaugural 10×10 tasting

Wines of Rioja is celebrating the “excellence and diversity” in the Rioja category with a showcase of 100 of the region’s top wines in early November.

Dawn harvest in Rioja

The “Rioja 10 x 10” trade tasting on Tuesday 10 November will feature Riojan wines within 10 categories from some of the region’s leading producers to illustrate the “quality and diversity” produced in the region.

The 10 categories are: Unoaked whites, Oaked whites, Rosado, Unusual wines, Generic wines over £15, Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva, Wineries seeking representation, and Red made from non-Tempranillo varieties.

The 100 wines were selected from over 400 entrants which were tasted blind by a panel of twelve experts including wine buyers, writers and specialists, chaired by Tim Atkin MW and Sarah Jane Evans MW.

“The 10 x 10 tasting highlighted the quality as well as the growing diversity of Spain’s most famous wine region and was a pleasure to judge,” Tim Atkin MW said.

Sarah Jane Evans MW added: “Diversity. That sums up our tasting. All in all, a tempting snapshot of Rioja in 2015.”

Rioja’s 10 x 10 line up will be available for the wine trade to taste on Tuesday 10 November from 12pm-6pm at Banking Hall, 14 Cornhill, London EC3V 3ND.

Attendees are invited to register their interest at www.riojatasting.co.uk.
