DRC reigns supreme at Acker’s HK auction

Demand is still high for top Burgundy at Acker Merrall & Condit’s autumn sale which realised HK$37 million.

Eighteen of the 25 sale lots came from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti as over 300 guests from five cities across Asia attended Acker’s Hong Kong sale.

Hong Kong remained the most active market accounting for over 45% of all lots sold while there was “new found competition” from Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei and Tokyo as well as interest from China and the US.

Acker’s Chairman, John Kapon said, “The action from our new friends in Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei and Tokyo was electric, bringing an extra level of energy and excitement to the sale.  We are on the ground everywhere, connecting on a personal level that no one else can compare.

“While the media has been making a lot of noise about the overall economic well-being of China in particular, it looked quite healthy from our vantage point.  The appetite for the best of the best clearly remains intact. Demand is going up, and supply is going down every day as bottles get consumed and wine is an increasingly active part of a diverse portfolio.”

Other wines offered and duly snapped up included Roumier, Rousseau, Comte Liger-Belair, Leroy, Vogue, Ramonet, La Mission Haut Brion, Margaux, Latour, Mouton, Lafite, Haut Brion Blanc and Yquem, plus “standout performances” from wines usually featured in New York sales such as Guigal, Chave, Soldera, Harlan, Bryant and Opus One.

The next Acker Hong Kong auction will be on 7 November.
