Vicky Lau named Asia’s best female chef

Vicky Lau, owner and chef at Tate Dining Room in Hong Kong, has been named “Veuve Clicquot Asia’s Best Female Chef 2015”.

The award is part of the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants programme sponsored by S. Pellegrino & Acqua Panna and rewards an “exceptional” female chef whose cooking “excites the toughest of critics”.

A graphic design graduate from New York University, Lau initially began her career as a designer but with a passion for cooking she enrolled at Le Cordon Bleu in Bangkok and then honed her skills at Michelin-starred Cépage in Hong Kong under the tutelage of Sebastien Lepinoy.

She opened her own restaurant, Tate, in 2012 serving French-inspired dishes with an Asian influence and presented with her designers eye for presentation and unique visual cues.

Each menu is designed to be an “edible story” and have a common theme as well as elaborately designed dishes.

Lau commented: “As an independent chef working in a very competitive environment, being named Asia’s Best Female Chef is a validation of the hard work I’ve put in.

“Having grown up in Hong Kong and educated in the West, I feel my work is infused witha variety of culinary influences and I am honoured that the respected industry experts voting on this award appreciate and recognise my efforts.”

The award ceremony will take place at the Capella Hotel in Singapore on 9 March.
