IMW welcomes new members

The Institute of Masters of Wine officially welcomed six new members and rewarded top performers in this year’s examinations at an event in London this week.

Originally announced in September, the new MWs are Natasha Hughes (UK), Anne Krebiehl (Germany), Louise Sydbeck (Sweden), Robin Kick (US), Robert MacCulloch (UK) and Nicholas Paris (US).

Four of the seven awards went to Natasha Hughes MW, who won The Errázuriz Awards for the top performance in the Business of Wine paper; The Robert Mondavi Winery Award for outstanding performance across all Theory papers; The Taransaud Tonnellerie Award for excellence in the Production and Handling of Wine paper; and the IMW Outstanding Achievement Award, sponsored by the Austrian Wine Marketing Board, for the candidate who excels in all parts of the exam.

Anne Krebiehl MW won The Villa Maria Award for her performance in the Viticulture paper, as well as The Noval Award, sponsored by Quinta do Noval, for her dissertation on The Future of Premium German Pinot Noir.

The Bollinger Medal for outstanding tasting ability went to Louise Sydbeck MW, who also became the 100th female Master of Wine.

Addressing the new members at the Vintners’ Hall reception, IMW chairman Sarah Jane Evans MW, said: “This is an exciting and special day for all Masters of Wine. We all remember the moment that we were welcomed into the Institute here at Vintners’ Hall.

“Watching you live this experience today is a reminder to all of us of the effort it takes to reach this goal, and of the rewards and lifelong friendships that come as a result of achieving it. Many congratulations to all of you for your hard work, diligence, and dedication.”
