Asian wine producers unite

A new association for wine producers across Asia has been announced with the aim of promoting and presenting the region’s burgeoning winemaking industry to the world.

Launched at last week’s HKTDC fair, the Asian Wine Producers aims to unite winemakers from Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Burma, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam and currently counts GranMonte and Siam wineries from Thailand, Hatten Wines from Bali and Sula Vineyards from India among its members.

The associations’ objectives are to: promote the recognition of Asian wine producers and Asia as a respected wine region; present Asian wines to the world; enhance the image of Asian wine and winemakers domestically and internationally and promote the wineries and regions as tourist destinations.

Speaking to the drinks business, Maryse LaRocque, special projects, marketing & business development advisor at Hatten Holdings in Indonesia, explained that the AWP was a way of, “helping each other to get the word out on quality and origin.”

It was, she said, time the world began to further recognise the growing viticultural industry across Asia and the quality of the wines being made there.

“We have vineyards, we grow grapes and we make wine,” she said.

The AWP will only be open to producers growing and using grapes rather than fruit or grape concentrate.

Additionally, the AWP’s website should provide a forum for winemakers across Asia to “talk and engage with each other,” sharing tips and offering suggestions to each other too.
