The world’s most expensive wine
There are a variety of candidates for the record of the world’s most expensive wine, but the Penfold’s Ampoule is currently top of the list at £100,000. The hand-blown glass ampoule contains the Penfolds Block 42 Kalimna Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 and only 12 ampoules have been produced.
The scientific-grade ampoule, designed to store the wine in an ideal environment, and encased within the glass sculpture, was created by veteran scientific glassblower Ray Leake.
Furniture craftsman Andrew Bartlett designed and made the bespoke Jarrah cabinet, where the ampoule is suspended and Australian designer-maker Hendrik Forster prepared all the precious metal detailing. One of the other key features of the ampoule is that when the owner decides to open the wine a senior member of the Penfolds winemaking team will attend the opening.
