Rare decanter auctioned for Alan Lodge appeal

A rare decanter of Coca Blue liqueur is being auctioned off to raise funds for the Alan Lodge Brain Appeal.

The decanter, worth £1,000, is one of just 20 that were produced to commemorate the end of the Mayan calendar – and supposed end of the world – on 21 December 2012.

The decanter has been kindly donated by the drinks group Babco to help raise money for the Alan Lodge Brain Appeal. The former news and website editor for the drinks business and deputy editor for the Spirits Business died of a brain haemorrhage in February 2012, aged 29.

The liqueur is made using 100% Bolivian coca leaves – the raw source of cocaine – which are picked at 2,000 metres above sea level where the air pressure forces the leaves to grow smaller and richer in flavour.

The auction is currently taking place on eBay and kicks off at £500. The auction ends on 19 December, which means the winning bidder will receive their Coca Blue decanter before the End of the World begins.
