Value remains in lesser Bordeaux vintages

The 2007 and 2008 vintages of popular Bordeaux brands are looking particularly good value at present, according to the drinks business December Fine Wine Monitor – a monthly market report compiled by Liv-ex.

An analysis of the current prices of a range of châteaux shows that Lagrange 2008, Sociando Mallet 2007, Vieux Château Certan 2008 and Talbot 2008 are trading at more than 20% below the average price for equivalent vintages.

The Liv-ex research suggests that although demand in Asia is focused on just a handful of wines, should attention expand to a wider range of châteaux, these vintages are unlikely to remain at such prices for much longer.

Indeed, from a basket of 25 châteaux studied over the last 12 months, the average increase for the cheapest wine available was 45%, in contrast to an overall average rise of 26%.

The largest moves were among those wines most popular in Asia, such as Duhart-Milon, which rose 146% for the 2007 vintage and Beychevelle, up 85% for its 2008.
