Battling against the effects of alcohol

Three initiatives aimed at minimising the impact of alcohol have been launched in the UK in the last week. The Community Alcohol Partnership has been launched in Kent while Heineken and Stella Artois have each launched their own responsible drinking campaigns.

Kent’s Community Alcohol Project, the scheme to curb underage alcohol sales associated with anti-social behaviour, is backed by the Retail of Alcohol Standards Group, the authority which has just launched its toolkit to help CAPs to be rolled out elsewhere in the UK.

The Kent CAP brings together authorities and retailers in an effort “to drive down underage alcohol sales and possession and improve the health and education of young people in relation to alcohol.” Initially, the scheme will be introduced into three areas of the county including Canterbury’s city centre.

Talking of the CAP, Home Office Minister Alan Campbell said: "Government, police and industry have delivered some real progress in working together to tackle alcohol-related crime and disorder. The failure rate for persistent test purchases has fallen from 34% to 15% since the end of 2006. That is why I fully support the Kent Community Alcohol Partnership.”

Meanwhile Heineken, the first brewer to introduce a responsibility message on every can and bottle linked to an educational website on responsible drinking, has launched an international responsible drinking campaign.
Know The Signs is an internet-based campaign. The website www.knowthesigns.com shows a typical bar scene and asks viewers to interactively spot the signs that demonstrate when drinkers have had one too many. The beer says that the website aims to encourage “more informed choices and better drinking habits among those who display irresponsible behaviour and alcohol consumption patterns.”

Anheuser-Busch InBev brand Stella Artois has teamed up with Olympian rower James Cracknell to launch its nationwide campaign Get Home Safe. The brand’s initiative stems from research that reveals 83% of Britons get frustrated when trying to get home after a night out due to a lack of planning their journey. On Get Home Safe Cracknell outlines his “top tips” for returning home safely after a drink during the festive period.
