Chablis appellation launches online interactive game
The rich history of Chablis deserves to be experienced by all, and what better way to introduce newcomers than via an online interactive game?
the chablis subsoil may have been formed 150 million years ago, but the region’s approach to education is far from archaic. Industry professionals are being invited by the Burgundian subregion to test their knowledge on everything Chablis and further discover the area’s stunning white wines with a virtual game called Unlock Chablis.
There is no need to book flights and hotels to be transported to a magnificent vineyard in Bourgogne and embark on a treasure hunt riddled with secret codes to uncover the history, heritage, and wines of the region – it can all be done from the comfort of home with the help of the new online game.
“The idea originally came about as the world moved out of the Covid-19 pandemic, during which everyone – including the wine industry – saw an increased digital presence: whether this was online events, new ways of connecting with each other, or for research and educational purposes,” says Paul Espitalié, Chablis Commission of BIVB president.
“Chablis has chosen to tap into this increasingly digital world; with the goal of educating people on our wines, in a modern and entertaining context, in mind.”
Chablis wines may be made with 100% Chardonnay, but they are by no means lacking in complexity. The unique conditions of the soil and the climate in this region allow the Chardonnay grape to express itself like in no other territory.
“On paper, Chablis is straightforward. One grape and one colour, grouped into four appellations: Petit Chablis; Chablis; Chablis Premier Cru; and Chablis Grand Cru,” Espitalié says. “Despite this apparent simplicity it is one of the world’s most unmistakable and inimitable wines; a unique combination of varieties, soils, and climates.”
Unlock Chablis has been designed with wine professionals in mind, taking them “on a journey to discover the history, terroirs and versatility of Chablis wines in a fun and relaxing way”, in turn allowing them to learn more efficiently.
Young sommeliers or busy wine retailers who may not have the time to attend masterclasses or seminars are the region’s main target audience. The game is a quick way to refresh your knowledge of Chablis – or learn about it for the first time.
The multiplayer function of the game also allows groups of players (whether these are merchants, or sommeliers) to bond together while learning about the exciting world of Chablis.
Unlock Chablis merges a historic wine region with modern digital technology. “Nowadays, so much of the world is focused on the digital, and the wine world is no exception. The Unlock Chablis game allows us to communicate our key messages to wine professionals in an entertaining, modern way; yet still remain educational,” says Espitalié.
“Digital-heavy contexts allow us to increase the accessibility of Chablis wines, and gives us innovative ways to talk and learn about these, removing any barriers.”
