New York bar charges $125 for a beer

New York bar chain Treadwell Park serves Oud Beersel’s Bzart Lambiek at US$125 a bottle at its Upper East Side site, which is believed to be the most expensive bottled brew on pour in the city.

As reported by the Wall Street Journal, Treadwell Park is one of a growing number of bars putting high-priced bottled brews on ‘reserve lists’.

Among those also pioneering the concept of ‘fine beer’ is Lower Manhattan’s Pretty Ricky’s, which as well as a long list on draught, also serves Deus from Belgium’s Brouwerij Bosteels for $90 a bottle.

Also on its reserve list is Gueuzerie Tilquin’s Oude Gueuze Tilquin à l’Ancienne for $60, a ‘New York Flanders red ale’ courtesy of the Catskills Brewery for $50 and Maine-based Allagash Brewery’s Bourbon barrel-aged Belgian triple called Curieux at $45 a bottle.

Manhattan bar Beer Authority likewise has some high-priced bottles on its list, including Brewery Ommegang’s Wild At Heart for $40, Brooklyn Brewery’s Black Ops Imperial stout for $45, and Cascade Brewing’s Kriek sour from Portland at $55

For many it’s not surprising that some New York bars are treating beer like fine wine. New York was home to the first restaurant that was awarded a Michelin star which only served beer.

Opened by former Noma pastry chef Daniel Burns in 2013, Luksus closed its doors in 2016. However, Tørst, the attached beer bar, remains open. Like its other New York counterparts it’s also no stranger to $90 a bottle beers.

Its extensive list features three beers priced at over $90 and a further 49 priced at $40 and over a bottle.
