The Global Masters Beer of the Week: Toast Ale Craft Lager

Every week, we select a drink that picked up either a Gold or Master from our competition series, and tell you why the judges loved it. Enter the Global Masters, and this could be yours.

Last week, we invited a crack team of beer sommeliers and certified cicerones to help us judge our 2019 Beer Masters.

We normally dedicate this column to wines that shine in our annual competitions, but with the taste of hops still playing on our minds, and the unusually warm weather in the UK this week, we decided to cool off with a very special serve from a beer business that champions sustainability.

All of Toast Ale’s beers are brewed with surplus fresh bread from bakeries, delis and other sandwich makers.

In the UK, Toast contracts its brewing out to World Top Brewery in Yorkshire, touted as one of the most sustainable in the UK. Internationally, Toast Ale works with local breweries rather than exporting to ensure the beers are as fresh as they can be for each consumer market.

At our Masters competition, the judges were impressed by this light lager’s delicate hoppy character. The end product is a fruity, crisp beer where aromas of malt and fresh bread shine through.

The beer: Toast Ale Craft Lager

The source: World Top Brewery in Yorkshire, UK

The hop(s): Perle, Spalter, Mittelfruh

The style: A pilsner-style lager full of hop character

The price: £28 for 12 cans from Toast’s website, £1.80 for 330ml in Tesco or £1.99 in Waitrose.

The medal: Gold – The Global Beer Masters, 2018

With high-quality judges and a unique sampling process, the Global Masters provides a chance for your wines, or beers to star, whether they hail from the great vineyards of Europe or lesser-known corners of the world.
