Five last-minute creative ways to celebrate Mother’s Day

If you’re honest, you forgot about it until this morning, didn’t you?

You’d think that working in the drinks industry would make sourcing Mother’s Day gifts easy, but those in hospitality often need to go the extra mile to prove they’re not just scrambling through their cupboards for that artisnal gin saved for a rainy day.

Fear not, if you’re struggling to find something original in the gift department, we’ve listed our picks of the best presents and days out to show mum you care this year.

The cocktail one

Are you and mother dearest going to be in London this weekend? Take her on a bar-crawl that celebrates women in the drinks trade.

A number of bars in the capital are showcasing one-off serves and drinks menus this weekend. World Class drinks and OXO Tower Bar have collaborated to create a bespoke cocktail menu, championing women in the industry for Mother’s Day by using spirits labels that have employed women in crucial roles, from Roe & Co Master Blender, Caroline Martin, to Tanqueray senior archivist Joanne McKerchar.

The other potentially messy one

What’s better than unlimited fizz? Unlimited fizz delivered via a train, of course.

Burger & Lobster has teamed up with Taittinger to launch a bottomless brunch where flutes of fizz make their merry way to guests on a train set.

For £25 guests get a ticket to ride the effervescent express, allowing them to pick up as many flutes of Taittinger Brut Reserve NV as they like from the train while it does the rounds for an hour and a half.

The offer will run from 29 March for four weeks, so even if you don’t go on Sunday, you cab still get your Champers fix another time.

You can book the Champagne Train experience here.

The high maintenance one

If you’re the kind of person that goes for haircuts with their mother, Soho’s salon-cum-cocktail bar Blade has a treat for you.

This year, Blade is inviting all those that book themselves and mum in for a hair appointment to enjoy a special apple-themed selection of cocktails made with Brännland Artisanal Swedish Cider, all on offer at 2-4-1. Bottles of Brännland Just Cider, which will be available at half price.

The “but you said you love John Cleese!” one

Many a British mum (and their children) will remember John Cleese’s lead character in the iconically chaotic show Fawlty Towers. Now, you too can be part of the action with an immersive dining experience coming to London’s Radison Blu in Bloomsbury, with plenty of bookings still available for both lunchtime and dinner Sunday…

The experience, described by one DesignMyNight reviewer as “more than we expected”, has been in residency in London’s Theatre-land since October 2012, and includes a three-course meal and two-hour show featuring improvisation, audience participation, and of course, “Bail Faulty”.

You can book the “Faulty Towers” dining experience here.

The “I really did buy this” one

Prove you didn’t just hoist that bottle out of the back room with a personalised message on the label.

Brought to you by The Whisky Exchange, you can choose from six label designs, add one of ten messages (from the saccharine to sarcastic) including your own text, or personalise the entire label of this London Dry Gin. It’s The Whisky Exchange’s first gin, made with botanicals including grapefruit, coriander seed, liquorice root and juniper, and is on sale for £44.95.

The service also comes with a speedy delivery option, which, frankly, is necessary at this point.
