ELLC and Borough Market launch ‘savoury’ gin in time for Christmas

Southwark’s Borough Market has teamed up with the East London Liquor Company to launch a limited-edition gin in time for the festive season, flavoured with botanicals including winter savoury, fennel seeds, sage and bay leaves.

The release marks the first time that the historic market has launched a gin. Produced in a limited edition run of 1,000 bottles, Borough Market Gin is priced at £32.99 a bottle.

The gin is distilled with juniper berries, coriander seeds, orris root, angelica root, lemon peel, thyme, winter savoury, fennel seeds, sage, bay leaf and lavender to replicate the scents and flavours of “a typical English herb garden”, according to ELLC.

The base spirit is made from 100% British wheat and is subsequently re-distilled by ELLC at its distillery in Bow Wharf.

For the first week of December, the gin will available exclusively from Borough Market’s Information Office.

Darren Henaghan, managing director of Borough Market said: “Borough Market has long been home to an incredible range of traders who are committed to providing the best quality food and drink. We are very excited about this collaboration with East London Liquor Company to release our first Borough Market Gin.

“It’s a great way to celebrate the fantastic produce from one of traders, as well as reflecting the wonderful aromas and flavours that can be found at the Market. We hope our visitors will enjoy the drink in the upcoming festive period!”

Alex Wolpert, founder of the East London Liquor Company, added“For the past three years we’ve found our second home at Borough Market, surrounded by enthusiastic neighbours as equally passionate about the quality and provenance of local food and drink as we are. The release of Borough Market Gin is a celebration of our ongoing commitment to the good things in life.”

Last month, Borough Market launched its fourth limited-edition beer made from hops grown at the site and five kilograms of earl grey tea from one of its traders, Organic Life.

The beer was made in a collaboration between Daniel Tapper of the nomadic Beak Brewery and Partizan Brewing, based in Bermondsey. An earl grey saison, the brew was produced with fresh rather than dried hops and over five kilograms of loose leaf Earl Grey tea. Oats, wheat, barley and rye were also blended with over a kilogram of fresh Fuggles hop flowers giving the beer flavours “reminiscent of marmalade, mint and clove”.
